Ceramic Care Tips

Your handmade ceramic item is a functional piece of art, but also fragile and needs to be handled with love and care.

Here are a few tips to ensure it lives a long and happy life!

Washing

Are these pieces dishwasher safe? The short answer is yes, but handwashing is preferred.

The dishwasher is harsh on ceramic surfaces and can dull the glaze over time. Handwashing is preferred to protect your glaze. If you do use the dishwasher it’s recommended to use a non-abrasive soap, low in citric acid. Make sure it’s rinsed and try to avoid stacking them or having them touch during washing.

Heating

Are these pieces microwave and oven safe? Yes to the microwave and no to the oven.

Although you can use it in the microwave you should keep the following in mind to protect your piece from sudden temperature changes. Ceramics expands and contracts with temperature, so sudden changes can cause it to crack.

For the microwave use the low settings to gently reheat food for 1-2 minutes. Do not use in the microwave to defrost or reheat cold food directing from the fridge. Caution should be taken when reheating food high in fat, such as milk or butter, which will get very hot quickly in the microwave. Take care in removing items from the microwave.

Do not use in the oven! The oven can get up to 400 degrees and the rapid cool-down after taking your piece out can cause it to crack.

Avoiding Stains

Avoid contact with foods high in citric acid and deep-colored foods for long periods of time, such as berries or beets. Try not to let your piece sit in the sink because the parts of your piece that are bare clay (aren’t glazed) can stain easily.

All of Kay Moz Ceramic pieces are crafted from stoneware clay and glazed with non-toxic, food-safe glazes.
